Whilst posted to No. 478 (Maintenance) Squadron, during 1975-1978, based at RAAF Base Butterworth, Malaysia, the powers that be let their guard down enough to suffer me as a station announcer on the RAAF Radio Butterworth frequencies ... our charter was to provide entertainment to the personnel and their dependants ... which we did, in sooo many ways!
All the studio/on-air stuff was “live” and manual, so we had to be quite careful that no Malaysian Government feathers were ruffled by saying or playing anything, they would have frowned upon ... “Puff the Magic Dragon” and Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” were both on the official banned list, but Cheech and Chong weren’t …
The publicity pic was done for the local newspaper “at home”, to illustrate the way we filled in our off-duty time, when we weren’t doing other stuff in the tropical paradise of Georgetown, Penang ...
