Steve Cross - More
The occasion of wearing my No.1 uniform was a feature by my local newspapers, The Doncaster Free Press and Evening Post dated 2nd August 1982, on celebrating the safe return of my brother from the Falklands Conflict during his RN service on HMS Exeter. During the conflict, Exeter shot down three Argentine aircraft (two A-4C Skyhawks on 30 May, and a Learjet 35A on 7 June; all with Sea Dart missiles). It was also claimed that she shot down an Exocet missile on 30 May that was heading straight for her using three Sea Darts. My part in Operation Corporate was less exciting, RAF Lossiemouth's 12 Squadron Buccaneers were being deployed into the region and the mobility supply flight was busy filling ISO containers with ground equipment in readiness.
The other photo: In 1981 I believe I was the first LAC Movements Operator posted direct from the Movements School to MSF at RAF Lossiemouth. Ken Grant was SNCO i/c and initially was disappointed that he didn't get the SAC Movements Controller he required to replace Bob Simmons. I was nearly sent back to the School, when eventually station Pers Admin convinced Ken of at least seeing me. After about half an hour of discussion, the phone rang on Ken's desk, we both looked at it as it rang, I quickly answered the call and dealt with the query. On replacing the receiver, Ken agreed that perhaps I was able to do the job and allowed me to stay. This photo was taken circa 1983, when F/O Trevor Patch joined the section, Sgt Ken Grant,  Cpl's Dave Sadler and Ian Sloane (Ex NEAF MAMS), SAC's Andy Cowieson, Steve Vigar & Sid Sidebottom were in residency at Lossiemouth Air Movements Section (LAMS) and the 'Tufty Club' at the time, but that's another story!
My time at Lossie came to an end in Jan 1985, with SAC Andy Pow replacing me on my posting to Lyneham.
