Seasons greetings to one and all from Australia! Hoping all of you have a fantastic Christmas and New Year.  Leanne and I will be spending ours in Canberra and I suspect there will be less chance of snow than where some of you are.  Busy period for my team (381SQN) as we are on short notice to move for HADR operations and it is the start of cyclone season followed by support to the Australian International Air Show in the New Year. Again, best wishes to all and enjoy the festive season.
From: Bob Dixon, Royal Wootton Bassett
Season’s greetings to all Movers and especially those who know me!  Now I am hiding behind a beard to add to retirement anonymity and life is good living in ‘Bassett’ (Royal Wootton!)  My apologies for my absence from the UKMAMS Association Dinner in May.  I could not be there because it was my Golden Wedding Anniversary and I was therefore cruising between Amsterdam and Budapest with Sue.  This was one celebration I could not duck out of!  Thanks to all who do stay in touch with particular thanks to Sam Heaphy, Ian Berry, Colin Allen, Merv Johns and their wives and Issy Roberts for their very pleasant company at frequent Sunday lunches and other events throughout the year.  It was good to see Association members parading for Remembrance Sunday in London at the Cenotaph and to keep up with both Regulars and Reservists via their Squadron Associations who have kindly kept me on as their Honorary President.  It has always been a privilege and a challenge to enjoy life with so many dedicated people at work and play over the decades and I wish you all well for Christmas 2016.  Have a successful 2017.
RCAF to get 16 rescue planes for $2.3 billion
OTTAWA - More than 10 years after then-prime minister Paul Martin said replacing Canada's ancient military search-and-rescue planes would be made a "major priority," the federal government has finally settled on a winner.

The Liberal government announced that Canada will spend $2.3 billion to buy 16 new military search-and-rescue aircraft from European aerospace giant Airbus, the first of which will touch down in 2019.

Mover is new Station Warrant Officer at RAF Northolt
Warrant Officer Elisha Evans MBE has taken over the role of Station Warrant Officer at RAF Northolt.  She officially took control of the Station Warrant Officer's cane on 23 September from Warrant Officer Colin Sharp.

A logistician by trade, Mrs Evans joined the RAF in April 1991 and served in all aspects of the Movements trade including a role at the Defence Moments School.  She was awarded an MBE in the 2016 New Year's Honour's List..

She said, "I'm delighted and honoured to have been appointed RAF Northolt's Station Warrant Officer. It's already clear to me what a professional and dedicated team Northolt possess and I'm looking forward to playing my role in that."

Subject: Waking the Tree
I read a wonderful, wonderful Xmas story called "Waking the Tree".  A woman who had very little at Xmas,  had her daughter wake the Xmas tree in the month of December.

Each morning her daughter woke with a purpose, walked into the living room and stated "Good Morning tree... it is time to wake up". Her daughters eyes sparkled every morning and her joy brought warmth to their empty rooms.

She had taught her child to believe that Xmas is a magical time and the twinkle of a Xmas tree lightens a room and a child's eyes.  She had passed along the magic to her daughter who might one day walk into a quiet room and whisper in the ear of her own child, "Let's go wake the tree".

With this story in mind, I hope you find magic and Xmas joy with your family and children this year.  I hope it includes the magic of waking the Xmas tree.

Subject: S.S. WARRIMOO - A FASCINATING TRUE STORY

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix & brought the master, Captain John Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo's position was LAT 00 31' N and LON 179 30' W.  The date was 31 December 1899.

"Know what this means?" First Mate Payton broke in, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line".

Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime.  He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ships position.  He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark.  Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor.

At midnight the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many:
The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & the middle of summer. The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.  The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.
This ship was therefore in:
Two different days
Two different months
Two different years
Two different seasons
Two different centuries
All at the same time!

I am delighted to have been back in contact with so many friends this year that I have not seen and spoken to for so long. I have been fortunate enough to be at the cenotaph watching UKMAMS marching past and also having a small sherbet afterwards. I also had the immense pleasure of attending this years top table at Brize Norton  catching up with some old friends and making some new friends. I must admit that although I left the RAF over 25 years ago it was like I had just left the room for a short time and when I walked back in the warmth and banter had not changed a bit. We are jut slightly older and slightly greyer or more hair deficient.  Thank you very much Tony for the work that you do, keeping us all up to date and in contact with each other. I would like to wish all movers, serving or not, a very Merry Christmas and prosperous and safe new year.

Christmas cards have been sent to a few selected individuals, and if you received one, please consider yourself lucky. You will notice the card salutation has been written in pencil so the wording can be erased and the card re-used next year. If your name is Syd, you can just send the card back next year with no alterations.  Notwithstanding the above drivel, we wish everyone a truly Happy Christmas and a great 2017. If you are away from home and your family, may you return quickly.  Love and kisses to each and everyone, go well, stay safe and may you have enough.

My involvement with Air Movements was through 4624 Sqn (Sep 83-Sep 95). I met and worked with a number of ‘Regulars’ during my 12 years as an Auxiliary and had a great time. After leaving 4624, I joined 4626 (Sep 96 - Sep 2005), and the 9 years with them was equally enjoyable. Currently I am the Officer Commanding 878 (Highworth) Sqn, Air Cadets, so I am continuing the part-time theme.  The photograph was taken in October at an Air Cadet dinner. I’m standing next to Sub Lieutenant Pascal Munster RN, a former Air Cadet and now a Service Helper when he is home on leave.

C130J completes technical flight at St Helena Airport
A Lockheed Martin C130J Hercules aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force and commissioned by DFID, successfully conducted a technical flight at St Helena Airport from Sunday 18th (arriving at 13.23hrs) to this morning, Monday 19th December 2016, departing for Ascension Island at 10.23hrs.

The aircraft carried out approaches to both runways, conducted a fly-by at 500 feet and a ‘teardrop’ turn - landing without problem on Runway 20, from the north.

In November 2011, St Helena Government signed a Design, Build and Operate (DBO) contract with Basil Read (Pty) Ltd.

The contract included £201.5 million for the design and construction of the airport, an additional amount - of up to - £10 million on shared risk contingency and £35.1 million for 10 years of operation.
The project aims to provide air services to St Helena, fulfilling the UK Government’s commitment to maintaining access to the Island and provide it with a real opportunity for economic growth through tourism.

Both the St Helena Government and the UK Government hope that this will lead to eventual financial self-sustainability for St Helena.

I would like to thank you for a wonderful job you do on the OBA and as I'm in my second year of retirement I'm like a cat on a hot tin roof trying to find some kind of work just to keep me occupied and out from under the missus' feet.  I would just like to say Merry Xmas to all the guys who remember me, and a thought for all those who have passed on to the crew room in the sky. To all the movers present and past a Happy 2017, I'll have a drink for you all.

53 Years ago I had my first Movements posting to FEAF MAMS. Since then I've met many people we all know, the giant personality that was Bob Turner, sadly no longer with us, (FG OFF) Tony Mullen, now residing in OZ, Gp Capt Bill Girdwood now in Ealing, Geoff Gill, haven't heard from in years, and Big Geordie Readman living in Bristol and Rab Devlin.  Next came UKMAMS (at Abingdon), with for a short time, your good self, Dave Barton, Norrie Radcliffe, Hughie Curran. Then came the Squadron move to Lyneham. Where I met Keith Parker, Bruce Oram, Mick Maybery, Sammy Allen, Sam Heaphy and Ian Berry. Sorry if I've left anyone out (age thing).  To all of you I wish you all a very Happy and Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

May I extend Season's Greetings to all of our Movements Family wherever they may be this Christmas Season. We particularly remember those away from home & loved ones performing essential duties in often hostile environments.  To all those who may recall me, or my name, sorry about that but try to have a wonderful holiday season anyway!  And, to you, Tony, our many thanks for being the engine behind this great enterprise that keeps us all connected & remembered to each other.  Happy Christmas everyone.
From: Kev (Geordie) & Chris Stanger, Calgary, AB
2016 was a very interesting year for me, Chris and I are now Canadian Citizens making us Britnadians! Strange swearing allegiance to the Queen who is already my Queen!  I found out I have an extended family I didn't know about, so enjoying learning lots of family history (thanks to Martin Liggett for the guidance he was kind enough to share). Here's to "Wishing Movers old and new a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe Prosperous New Year." For those no longer with us I'm sure there will be a lot of banter in that crewroom in the sky; we raise a glass to them with fond memories. Don't forget those on ops,  away from their families, stay safe and enjoy whatever and however you can (I know how resourceful you are). Safe trails.

Thank you for all your work in keeping us old movers in contact throughout the year, it is truly a magnificent effort. I have attached a photo of 3 of the original UKMAMS personnel from 1966 at RAF Abingdon. These are from left to right, myself, Gp Capt Robbie James and the indominable W.O. Charlie Cormack. The photo was taken at the 50th UKMAMS Reunion Dinner at the old RAF Wroughton mess, now a country hotel and convention centre. I wish all the old movers a happy Christmas and, being a Scot, a great and Happy New Year. In particular the old 1966 UKMAMS namely, Robbie, Charlie, Dave Powell (a real character), Nigel Furney, Nigel Saunders, Ray Clark and not forgetting John Beadman who I would like to get in touch with again. Also Chris Heyland who was a station mover at Abingdon at the same time.

Ummm, what to give all Movers for Christmas?  A tough choice.  Historically it would be booze, food containing booze or a good woman to buy the booze. My present this year is a game, a party game, the funniest and most competitive I have ever witnessed.  Take an empty cardboard cereal box, top flaps open, stand it on the floor. Challenge the guests to pick up the box with their teeth without touching the box with their hands and without kneeling or sitting on the floor.  Easy for most people in the first round.  For Round Two remove an inch all around the top of the box.  Repeat removing an inch or so in each round.  As the box gets closer to the floor the competition and the physical ingenuity of those remaining is a thing of beauty to behold.  A good game after a few beers!  Wishing everyone a wonderful and safe Christmas.

Greetings to all movers in this holiday season, (yes I say Happy Holidays). My family and I are still living in China and we intend to remain here until 2021. Living in S.W China means a sub-tropical climate, however working in China means Chinese driving (think Arab drivers with their brains removed) and internet restrictions that have sent me bald (and fat). Good luck to you all, stay safe and not too sober.

Subject: Save the Children

Christmas Greetings and a Happy New Year to all Movers both past and present.

Whilst we will be enjoying ourselves in the weeks to come there will be hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged children around the world suffering from neglect, abuse, malnutrition, sickness and separation from their parents.  If you would like to improve the lot of just one child in 2017, you might like to consider making a donation to the charity Save the Children which I have been a passionate supporter of and fund raising volunteer since I was involved in Operation Bushel in Ethiopia in 1984.

Save the Children currently works in over 50 countries worldwide but it is the Middle East refugee crisis that is concentrating the minds at the moment.  Funds are desperately needed and if you would like to support this very worthwhile cause please send a cheque, made payable to Save the Children, to me at the  following address:
87 Radley Road
Abingdon
OX14 3PR

If you do make a donation and pay income tax in the UK I will gift aid your donation unless you ask me not to.  This will increase your donation by 25%, at no cost to yourself, but you will need to let me know your full name and address.

Please be assured this not a scam but a genuine plea from the heart.  Thanking you in anticipation.

A happy Christmas to you all who may still remember me. Attach a painting from my TriStar days on 216 Sqn, painted I think by Roy Layzell an auxiliary mover who I flew with on a number of occasions. He painted this card while on a trip around Christmas time in 1998.  Best wishes to you all and good health and happiness in 2017.

Congratulations yet again on running the best military website on the net!  Your continuous publication of contributions from the lads is simply wonderful.  It is always full of great interest and banter which only proves what a great bunch ‘Movers’ are!  Last week I decided to run an Aviation Art Gallery in one of our Shopping Malls in Chelmsford to raise funds for the Royal Air Force Association. Whilst manning the event I was approached by a man  who introduced himself to me as a “Mover’.  It was Dick de Caires with his wife Linda and he had recognised me from the Old Bods Briefs! ‘Happy Christmas Dick and Linda.’   I wish you Tony, and each and every ‘Mover’ wherever he or she may be, a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year.

The picture was taken at The Irish Guards Mess, with Johnson Beharry VC - what a man!  [Following is copied from Wikipedia] "Lance Sergeant Johnson Gideon Beharry, VC (born 26 July 1979) is a British Army soldier who, on 18 March 2005, was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valour in the British and Commonwealth armed forces, for twice saving members of his unit, the 1st Battalion Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, from ambushes on 1 May and again on 11 June 2004 at Al-Amarah, Iraq. He sustained serious head injuries in the latter engagement. Beharry was formally invested with the Victoria Cross by Queen Elizabeth II on 27 April 2005."  To Johnson Beharry and all our troops retired and serving I wish a very happy safe Christmas and New Year.

I would like to wish each and every one connected to this wonderful web site a Wonderful Christmas and New Year.  These days I am part of  a great organisation of volunteers who throughout the country keep a watchful eye out on our coast; The National  Coastwatch Institution in conjunction with the established Coastguard . Latest claim to fame, some Sundays ago I actually "drove" the Dover Lifeboat, I would guess any naval types are cringing. Watches are made up of mostly former HM Forces and also Merchant Navy as well as people from some sailing back grounds, both male and female. So far very interesting learning the Navy way. So another year goes by hoping the new one brings peace to our troubled world. Not too sure I like to witness the Russian Navy going down the English Channel too often, too much smoke from the carrier's funnel for one, so much for exhaust emissions.

Firstly, many thanks to you for continuing to put together such an excellent read each month.  Every tale is interesting and invariably brings back memories of my time in the Service on Movements tours.  Checking my list of postings, it’s rather sad that the majority of the stations that I served on are now shut, but that’s the price the country pays for having an air force that’s smaller than it’s ever been.  On a lighter note, best wishes to all fellow movers for a great Christmas and I hope 2017 is good for you.

Subject: Remembrance Sunday

I was one of those 35 ex-Movers that were privileged enough to march past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, last month, with the UKMAMS Association.  The weather was glorious (apparently it hasn't rained on Remembrance Sunday for 18 years - someone's watching over us) and the atmosphere was extremely moving, with thousands turning out to support.  The inter-service banter, whilst waiting to march was, as ever, on form!   One of the Submariner's adjacent to us produced a 1.9 litre hip flask; God bless the Royal Navy.   The march was followed by a very well attended meet & greet at the Sherlock Holmes pub and I expect there were a few sore heads next day.   The Movers were very efficiently organised by John Belcher, for the second year, and thanks go to him for his logistical skills (and patience!).

I wish all serving and ex-serving Movers a safe, happy & healthy Yuletide and 2017.
From: Bill Girdwood, Ealing, London W5
I wish all my colleagues, past and present, in the movements trade, a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.  And to all of you out there on detachment, no matter how appalling, remember, those who remain behind, sitting in front of the fire, with an array of Christmas fare and all the beer that they could want, are all envious of your exciting roles; it was always like that on base movements! God bless you all.

Since leaving the service in 1988, I've done a few different jobs;  warehouse work, chef, carer for a family member and now working for a major supermarket. I hope all have a good Xmas.

Tony, Season's Greetings. Ahh yes, the old lump of coal [referenced in an e-mail reminder to those who were threatened with the naughty list for non-compliance!]. Well I grew up with 12 brothers and sisters in a 2-bedroom house here in New Glasgow. Dad worked building boxcars for Dosco. We had some pretty lean times, however Christmas was always special. No matter how tough the times we did well. I have story to relate. My Grandfather was a steam train engineer. The tracks used to run behind our house. He would slow the train down and the fireman would throw off several scoops of coal. It was our job after school to get the scuttles and go pick it, bring it home and put it in the furnace room. Mom always said if you don't get enough we'll fill your stockings with it. I don't think the kids today could handle that!

I hope the trade, past, present and future have a great Christmas and New year. Please take a moment on the big day to remember those who took their final flights this year and thoughts and prayers to those on Ops leaving families and loved ones behind over the holidays.

Here's wishing you and yours a wonderful Christmas and the same message to all movers serving and non-serving.

Subject: Greetings from "Christmas in Brisbane"

Here we are again, another year virtually over!

Thoughts that come to mind this time of year; fighting your way across the cargo shed full of Christmas trees, destined for distant parts of the Globe, with Phil Britton & Terry Roberts masterminding the distribution! The alternative Christmas  "Down South" in Port Stanley with the troops, and Dave Roberts showing his gentle, artistic, side, colouring-in a Christmas tree decoration!

My very best wishes to all Movers in the hope you have a very Merry Festive Season followed by a safe New Year.

Thanks for the nudge. I do indeed wish peace and good will to movers everywhere, past and present, even if they are having to operate in places where those seasonal gifts are not very much in evidence.

I especially wish to be remembered to all superannuated movers who predate the forming of the Squadron and who remember with affection dear old Gordon Spiers, o/c MAMS flight at Abingdon. I recognise names from those far off days in your excellent bulletins, and I'm still in touch with fellow team member Derek Clayton and fellow team leader Ian Stacey, although sadly I had to bid a distant farewell to another C team veteran recently, John O'Regan.
Compliments of the season to all!
On a totally different note, does anyone remember the old Bev that sat on the bundoo near the runway at Muharraq? It had a hole blown in the side of the freight bay you could walk through. It all happened before my posting to Bahrain in 1963, but I was told that the dastardly explosion occurred shortly after take off and the game old Bumbly simply changed course and landed again. Anyway, it was still there when I left in October 64.

Thanks Tony for the great work you do in keeping the Old Bods in touch throughout the globe, fantastic stuff. Here's hoping you have a great festive season yourself. We've been away in our motor home for a month & haven't been on the net much.

Carolyn and I parked our motor home in Bluff and headed south for few days earlier this month. There's not many places south of Bluff but a friendly welcome greets all comers to this little community in the southern ocean. As for the Bloody Mary Oyster shot... the best ever! Check it out folks; http://www.stewartisland.co.nz/

We're back home in sunny Golden Bay now and about to be invaded by visitors for Xmas. Here's wishing all those past and present 'Movers & Shakers' around the globe a safe and happy festive season.
