Letters to the Editor
Peter and Eve Clayton, Wroughton, Wilts

Hi Tony

May I wish everyone a very Happy New Year for 2023 and I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. Of course, here in the United Kingdom the cost-of-living crisis, strikes by many organisations and the apparent endless 'bad news' may well have dampened the season's festivities, so let's all look forward to a better year in 2023. Surely things can't get much worse can they? Let's hope not!

This year has been a sad year for many who have lost loved ones, so I send my condolences to those families and wish you all happier times ahead with treasured memories.

Happy New Year.

Regards Peter

Merry Christmas and Happy 2023 from Frank & Janet Johnston

This will give you an idea of what we've been up to in our retirement:

Sean Culligan, Carlingford, County Louth

Can you please pass on my very best to everyone that I knew and worked so closely with during my time in the greatest squadron ever! Currently living in Ireland and I have to say the luck of the Irish has not been with me this year. It’s been tough for all sorts of reasons so I’m really hoping 2023 will be kind to me and to all the rest of you.

Please keep the updates and memories coming. They are a pleasure to read!

Hi, Tony and all your readers,

Rita and I send warm Christmas Greetings to everyone in our Movements Family and their families and friends. If you are away for the festive season, as no doubt some will be, we hope you keep safe and are soon reunited to those who care for you. 2023? May it be prosperous and safe for us all, and let us hope that the unwarranted conflict against Ukraine comes to an end. After working with Ukrainians for 9 years, I have many friends there. Happy Christmas everyone, and raise a glass (or six!) to those who have gone before us.

Special Thanks to Tony who does Trojanic work each month keeping us informed and amused.

Lang may yer luhm reek, Folks.

Syd and Rita.
p.s. it does get cold and rainy in España!

Hello Tony,

Many thanks for your Newsletters.

I wish all Service  Members, Ladies and Gents, serving and retired, a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2023.

Many Moons ago on a visit to Okinawa with 48 Sqn Hastings, our crew met up with a group of American Marines who were on their way to Vietnam.  The leader was a very Big Sergeant named John Forehand, a large amount of booze was consumed. In the morning I was in the toilet feeling very fragile and looking in the mirror I put out my tongue, a voice said, “You aint gonna put that back in your mouth are you Mick?”  I often wonder what happened to Big John?

Take care, Mick

Good Day Tony, hope this finds you well and prepared for a festive season

Many thanks for the oportunity to wish all Movers and their families season’s greetings and our warmest wishes for 2023... As always our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and not forgetting those that are on duty over the festive period...

Take Care All, Stay Safe...

Hi Tony, To our global air movements family: Merry Christmas and season’s greetings to you all.

After 30+ years in the RNZAF, I decided to move on to a quieter role in Emergency Management with NEMA in New Zealand. So far I’ve been deployed more in the past year than I’ve been home, including multiple severe weather events in New Zealand, relationship building with our partner agencies in Niue and Vanuatu and have recently returned home assisting with the severe flooding across NSW, Australia. Thoughts to those communities and families that are displaced from their homes for Christmas.

Merry Christmas and all the very best for 2023.

And that’s me on the left in my happy place. Glad to have a job where I can keep flying!
Mark Attrill, Tartu

Greetings from a frosty Tartu, Estonia where its currently a balmy -13c (and it's only 2 December!). I attach a photo taken earlier today, some 150kms away in Orisaare on the Island of Saarema which, I believe is the only town in Europe if not the World to have an Oak Tree growing in the middle of the communal football pitch -  anyway, enough of this trivia.

In this most difficult, sad and challenging of years around the Globe and, in particular, here in Europe, I would like to reach out and wish everyone all the very best for Christmas and the New Year of 2023. In particular, I would like to remember all of those that have departed for that 'crewroom in the sky' this very year, those in the uniforms of the commonwealth who will inevitably be working over the festive season and the brave citizens and members of the armed forces in Ukraine who continue to fight for their freedom in the most brutal of wars here on our doorstep. May they all be in our hearts and prayers during this holiday season and let's all hope for better times in the New Year.

Tim Newstead, Bourton-on-the-Water, Glos

Thanks for the nudge – and, indeed, thanks for all that you do! Greetings and very best wishes of the season for Movers everywhere.  STAY SAFE – may you have peace and fulfilment and all you wish for yourselves and your families over Christmas and the New Year.  Keep on keeping on!

Merry Christmas to my fellow Movers and their loved ones all over the world.

This year came with some sadness and the passing of the legend that was Mick Day. My WO on A Shift BZN way back in ‘88. A lovely guy whose care and compassion kept a young Flt Lt in check back then! His funeral though, meant that the leadership team of that flight got together again, for the first time since those heady days!

Special Season’s Greetings to Dave Lacey, Brian Kent, and Pete Hopkins and their families.

Best wishes,

Simon Coughlan (Ex Flt Lt DAMO BZN)

Hi Tony,

It's that time of year already. I would like to send Seasons Greetings to all movers everywhere, stay safe and enjoy!

I have included a couple of pics of a memorable year for me. I had a dream flight in a Spitfire in September and had a smile from start to finish.

I then met up with a few ex Movers, 80+ of them, to march past the Cenotaph. A privilege and a pleasure to catch up with my ex-C Shift guys from the 80's. The pic shows Martin Cawley, Kevin Meiklejohn, myself, Russell Carter and JJ Jones. I have definitely shrunk!

Gary and Chris Ferguson, Ilkley, West Yorks

Merry Christmas to all with particular thoughts to those serving away from their families. Chris and I have had a great year. Became grandparents for the first time, Mia was born 18 Dec 21.

Also had a great catch up with Jim and Mary Lou Stenhouse after last meeting in Banff in about 2006. Dave and Shirley Yuile who live near in Harrogate also made it. The last time we were all together was Aldergrove about 1990.

Take care all and have a great New Year.

Shawn Bellas, Bungedore, NSW

Merry Christmas to you all,

Just a quick note to wish Movers across the world a very Merry Christmas.

For my Movements team at Richmond these past few years, you have all done a tremendous job keeping RAAF Richmond running smoothly and on time. You all deserve the break over Christmas and I hope, for once, there are no natural disasters to deal with over the festive season. You all deserve a real holiday for once.

As it’s been a while since my last post no doubt a few more have transitioned into retirement and for that I thank you for your service and enjoy a quiet beer of five. Maybe I can join some of you in years to come when I eventually retire, but not yet.

For those of you in the States for the next few years, give me a call as I am posted to the Pentagon. This time with the two remaining boys living at home, so it will be extremely quiet compared to previous postings. Most importantly the school plays rugby, so at least they are happy and don’t have to play gridiron.

Stay safe and have a happy healthy New Year.

Hi Tony,

Firstly thank you for all your hard work over the past 12 months in keeping this motley crew connected!

What a year it has been both nationally and personally. Far too many final farewells to members of our fantastic extended family and a few happier get togethers, including be able to attend the trooping of the colour at Buckingham Palace for the Platinum Jubilee of our late and beloved Queen and the association BBQ in RWB.
Personally Liz and I have literally travelled the world, (something I never achieved as a muppet!). January saw us in Iceland to celebrate Liz's birthday, June we had a week in Sharm el Sheikh for my big one at 60. Then in October we spent 3 and half weeks visiting Singapore,  Adelaide, Sydney, Honolulu, Big Island, Maui and finally L.A. before returning home whilst entertaining friends and family with a daily blog on Facebook!  No sooner than we had returned,  it was up to London to take part in the Remembrance Parade, so brilliantly organised by John Belcher. Wishing all Movers and families a merry Christmas and a happy new year and a few more happy reunions and looking forward to what 2023 has to offer.

Best wishes, Steve

Being a dinosaur among those who were Mobile in the main, I only know of two others from my era who were original "movers and humpers" when the only assistance to loading and unloading a sloping aircraft with a side opening door like a Hastings, was a pinch bar and a fork lift. Oh and of course... lots of TWO>>>>SIX!

No staying overnight or two in flashy hotels while away on a task before returning home to a loving family. It was either a 12 months posting unaccompanied or 2 and a half years in the fleshpots of Asia or a hell-hole in the Middle East. Surviving the Cold War (without recognition) was all we could ask for our Queen's shilling.

However, when all is said and done, we were all "movers and shakers" and we made lots of mates along the way, so I take this opportunity to wish all Movements personnel, past present and emerging, a very Merry Christmas and more importantly a safe and healthy New Year for 2023.

"O Holy Night" - Michael Crawford w/Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Although a confirmed atheist, I still think Michael Crawford (Some Mothers Do Have 'Em) really is the best exponent of this Christmas song.

After many years of being berated for my lateness and tardy attitude, (no reflection on my Service career!) and usually ending up on the naughty list... I thought that this year I would get in early. I'm just about to head down to Malaga for a pre-Christmas break, and a warming of the old bones, leaving all my Angling customers without maggots and worms for a few days!

This time of year always brings back memories for the old "manual" tasking board in MAMS Ops - who will be home for Christmas/New Year, who will be in exotic far flung places, and who will be dug in, cold and covered in mud...

I was generally very lucky in my many years on Mobile duties - Hong Kong, Nairobi, Tenerife and Calgary to name a few, were some of the locations I spent my "holidays" as a young carefree airman.

In later years it became Kuwait, Bagram or more often than not, on board a C17 loitering somewhere around the Middle East, with a crew that insisted we wore Santa hats and blew party whistles at every opportunity. They were all happy days and equally interesting and rewarding in their own ways.

Anyway, I could ramble on for days, but that would spoil the book. Rumour has it that Daniel Craig has retired and they're looking for a replacement... I believe Bond is over 6ft tall? I'm 6' 2"... just saying!

Right - to the point, Christmas - To all Movers, past and present, have a great Christmas and New Year.  And for you Tony, thanks for keeping us all connected -  Love you all.

All the Best

Mick

My wish for all of you "movers” who make the military world go round and keep on ticking is that wherever in the world you are this Christmas and New Year Season, is that you will be safe, happy, healthy and prosperous in 2023.

Your role is exceptionally important and cannot be overstated.

Be proud and know that you are appreciated more than you realize.

Cheers to all….

Following a remarkable 7 years and 8 months at Akrotiri I moved to the Netherlands and replaced Ian Robinson in to the NATO Airlift job at Joint Forces Command Brunssum, for those that remember HQ Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT) it’s the same place. Jumping from one overseas tour directly to another means my last 12 years in uniform will be spent abroad as the current plan is to remain here until my exit from service in 2025.

As I raise a glass to those dear friends and family now departed I would like to wish all members of the UKMAMS OBA a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year filled with good health and good times. Thank you Tony for the excellent newsletter and all you do to keep us all connected. Proost!

Merry Christmas one and all,

After 4 ½  years, I finally made it back to the UK to spend time with my son, 3 daughters and 4 granddaughters, the 22 month old I met for the first time.

I also managed to make it to London for the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall and the Remembrance Day Parade at the Cenotaph on the Sunday.  It was a fantastic weekend, I met chaps I hadn't seen for 20 or more years, but we chatted like we last saw each other the day before.  I wish I could have spent more time with many of you, but maybe next time.

On that note I wish all Movers world wide the very best for Christmas and a happy New Year.

Cheers!  Dave Salmon

Did you hear the one about a mover who went into hospital for a 24 hr magnesium infusion? He came out 5 weeks later with a pacemaker, a major heart attack, on insulin and with kidneys whose state was not caused by a gentle Wadsworth’s 6X or a few peaceful Lagavulin? And they say the NHS is understaffed and underfunded!

Seriously, it’s made me realise the value of family and friends and particularly of the Grumpy Old Movers.

I would sincerely wish all the OBA a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy & Happy New Year.
Andy Kay, Bowling Green, KY

Hi Tony,

In the hope of avoiding having smelly tubers deposited in our house, here is my Christmas message.

It was a year of highs and lows for all of us.  We lost the only monarch we ever served under, a time of great sadness but it was offset by England successfully winning the World Cup in Qatar against all expectations (this was sent before we played the quarter final game on the 10th, so maybe hope springs eternal). As always, I will raise a glass of good cheer to all ex-movers, wherever in the world they might be this Christmas and remember all we have lost this past year.

Cheers everyone.

Hello everyone!  I wish a Merry Christmas and happy holidays to the great movers family of logisticians far and wide.  Without us and our expertise nothing happens.  Also lets not forget Ukraine during this very difficult, destructive and volatile time.  Our thoughts should be with them for a better and safer free world. Over the holidays don't be alone and stay safe.

Cheers, Glen Falardeau, CD

Seasons Greeting to all movers young and old; even the old ones seem young nowadays! But especially thoughtful of all who are on deployments and can't be at home for the festivities.

Although we don't have the UK snow or temps out here in the Algarve we still like to celebrate. As evidenced by the photo of Theresa and I during our golf club's festive 9 holes.

Rusty, our buggy, managed to win best dressed buggy, but his owners were sadly lacking the skill required to win the golf competition!
Andy Spinks, Falmouth, Cornwall

Christmas is normally a time of good cheer, presents and family.  Sadly this year, we have lost a number of our friends whose families will miss them acutely, and we also think about those who will be working to support operations, working to help Ukraine, or possibly helping the civil authorities in UK.

Movements is truly a 24/7 business and usually all the more enjoyable for that.  But our thanks and Christmas wishes go particularly to those who have to work over the festive period, and we will also be raising a glass to the memory of those who are no longer with us.

With thanks to Tony for keeping us all in touch and a Merry Christmas to everyone, wherever this may find you.
Steve Sparkes, Lyminge, Kent

Firstly, thank you for all the hard work you put in producing the excellent newsletter, it is appreciated.

Although I was not a fully-fledged MAMS operative, having served a year in Sharjah, 69/70 on Air Movements and further involvement at West Raynham/ Marham on driving Boss side loader assisting MAMS with 41 Squadron Bloodhound transfers between Norfolk and Germany; I still look with interest at the events occurring, trying to relate / remember those I have served with.

May I wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year, especially those I was with at Sharjah, West Raynham and Marham.
David McGregor, Southport, Lancs

For my sins I am a member of the SSAFA Merseyside executive, I am the chairman of the Southport Armed Forces Day committee again, and have been for many years, and Chairman of the richest RAFA branch in Formby. again for many years, The same Sefton Council for Voluntary Service (with a £4 million budget) where I am a Trustee and Director. Finally I am a founder member of the Sefton Council Armed Forces Community Covenant.

Unfortunately none of that has anything to do with movements.

Have a great Christmas and new year

Regards, David

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all UKMAMS OBA Newsletter readers from down under.

2022 was one of the busiest years in recent history of the Royal Australian Air Force. This year, the RAAF has faced challenges such as Natural Disaster Relief Tasking, both domestic and international; supporting other nations in different ways and forms, and welcoming foreign forces that have come to help us on flood crisis, to participate in international engagement exercises, to pay us a visit; or to just use our strategic location for their own operations. While we are still catching up on all tasking that was pushed back by Covid-19, next year will be at least as busy if not more, with big and exciting exercises planned and more tasking than probably ever before. We are blessed to have amazing members that subconsciously adhere to our Organisation’s Values and are proud to serve their Nation at an excellent standard; to them, their families, and all readers of this Newsletter, may 2023 allow them to achieve all of their goals and live a prosperous and healthy life.

Hi Tony – wishing you and all your readers a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year in 2023.
Two originals - Mike Green and Ian Stacey
I am attaching a photo taken in November this year that may be of interest to you.  At first glance it may well appear to be just a picture of two very old farts but in fact it is photo of two of the original team leaders from when our Squadron was first formed back in the good old days at Abingdon in 1966.

Yes - that is me and Mike Green – we met up for an evening at the George at Dorchester, a popular watering hole for our chaps in those days where the beer was tasty and the barmaids accommodating.  We had our wives with us of course so we had to behave ourselves but a good time was had by all and it was a good opportunity for maintaining our fifty plus years of friendship.

As always Tony, a huge thank you for keeping the memories alive. With best wishes - Ian

Hello Tony,

Thanks for all your hard work this year putting the OBA newsletter together.

2022 was when I finally took off my RAF uniform, having donned it as a 16 year old in 1978 (it was getting rather tight and a bit whiffy after 44 years, to be honest), so it will be a festive period of reflecting on great times in the Service whilst looking forward to enjoying retirement in Norfolk.

Wishing you and everyone in the Movements family a wonderful Christmas and a New Year that brings peace and happiness.  Try not to get too stroppy, ease the tension with a drink or two, ramp up the merriment and bulk out, but remember to not go over payload and get back in trim in the New Year..

Best Wishes, Ken Felton

I wasn't a MAMS operative, curse my bad luck, and was only a humble Elec. (Air), sometimes known as a Lecky in informed circles. Anyway, I send my greetings for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the MAMS guys.

I would also like to tell all of a book I am currently reading. The author, named Ron Powell, is an online friend who was a Hercules pilot during the Falkland operation, flying backwards and forwards from Lyneham to Ascension Island.

He mentions the MAMS guys in his new book, "Fat Albert," which is published on Amazon. I believe it's currently only available in digital format, but a paperback version is in the works.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Don and Fern Hatton, Liscomb, NS
At the risk of having my stash of spuds from my garden being contaminated from a foreign specimen, Fern and I wish all the movers out there far and wide a very special Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And special greetings to those special guys and gals who will be spending the holidays separated from their families. This will be our first Christmas in our new digs, things sort of went south (not the warm one) this past spring, Fern was diagnosed with early onset of dementia and I had a pacemaker installed so we took up winter residence in a retirement community. Stay safe and stay well.
Jim Gillespie, Hampshire
Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year

Don Hunter, New Delhi
A very Merry and Blessed Christmas to all Movers, wherever they may be. I am currently working in India and I saw this sign yesterday at Bangalore Airport, but it is a government requirement at all Indian airports. They certainly respect and recognise their Armed Forces, past and present.  Perhaps our lot could learn a thing or two. May 2023 bring peace to the world and a good measure of happiness to all.
Graham Allen, Nottingham, Notts
Wishing everyone one of our Movers family a wonderful Christmas and a very Prosperous New Year. May health and happiness  be yours in abundance.
Chris "Pig" Clarke, Burlington, ON
A very Merry Christmas to all Movers, current and ex and for those trades who worked alongside us. It was great to see so many old mates for the Remembrance Day parade in London. It was a lot of fun and emotional at the same time. Happy New Year!

Basil Hughes, Pattaya

Dear All MAMS,

Best Wishes to all Movers and Ex Movers. Xmas will be very quiet for me as far as food goes, but I shall have my Step Grandchildren around me to keep me amused.  I still have many good memories of the old days – except Christmas on Christmas Island which was ruined for me and many when the Army RE contingent climbed on the tables and proceeded to march up and down destroying all the crockery and the fruit and Ice cream etc., that many of us were still eating. They said it was an Army mess custom - no manners!

Anyway, all of you have a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from a very old Mover who was one of the Movements Flight at Abingdon before it was a Squadron.

Basil H J Hughes  ex Cpl MAMS
Gary and Tannis Horobin, St Albert, AB
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the movers out there. Have a great year and stay safe!

Christmas greetings from Constable country where it is our first icy period as the Troll from Trondheim makes it's mark. Constable’s painting of the Blue Boy is very appropriate at the moment. Joking apart I wish all my movement friends a Happy Christmas and, hopefully, a more prosperous New Year. Enjoy yourselves and do not eat too much!

Neil Baldock, Royal Wootton Bassett, Wilts
Christmas greetings to one and all from Royal Wootton Bassett. Although I retired from the RAF 6 years ago I am still working at Brize Norton and enjoying civi street and being a grandad to two wonderful boys.
Andrew Downard, Ballarat, VIC
I'd like to pass on my best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to all 'Movers' past and present.  My picture this year has an air transport and whisky theme. The Whipper-snapper distillery in Perth Australia has as it's logo a Lancaster with barrels of whisky lashed under the wings. An apparently true story involving dodgy aircrew and helpful movers. Tastes pretty good too
👍

Keri "Taff" and Mary Eynon, Thatcham, Berks

Once again another year has slipped by and with it, sadly, we have bid farewell to more great friends. So we look forward to 2023 and wonder what it will bring. Hopefully the whole world situation and our own problems in the UK will start to be resolved and we can all look forward to a brighter future. Therefore, using the language of heaven, I wish everyone, those who remember me and the others I have read about through the newsletters, "Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Da." (translated from the Welsh - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year).

David and Michèle Forsyth, St Hilaire de Riez

Writing this as even the West of France is having a highly unusual cold spell, I include a photo taken at the height of summer to help create an image of warmth. And warmth is what Michèle and I want to use to wish all Movers and families, wherever they are, a Happy Christmas and a New Year full of joys. Massive thanks to Tony once more for all his work on this Newsletter and all the others which have been so interesting. Continuing the warmth theme, I can do no better than repeat last year's adage: "Lang may yer lum reek"

Alan Potts, Narbonne

A few words to wish all my fellow mover friends and their families a merry Christmas and the best of health for the year ahead. Also to all the movements brethren worldwide, stay safe wherever you may be over the festive season.

To all of the UKMAMS teams:

What a blessing we all had to be a part of this extraordinary squadron! Free travel and a look at some of the most exotic places on Earth (no, not Bury St. Edmonds!).

When I applied for UKMAMS after Sharjah, I was shocked to get in! After all, there were only 54 people on the teams at that time (1967) and only 18 SAC's. Ah, the stories you could all tell about your travels!

I hope that all of you and your families have a wonderful Holiday Season cozied up at home.

Once again, a sincere thank you to our wonderful webmaster Tony Gale for all of his work over the years. There's another bunch of stories about friends getting together and finding out the sad news about a passing. 'The crewroom at the other side'. Love that. In any event, perhaps 2023 is again the time to get together and subsidize some of Tony's activities (not THOSE activities!). He certainly deserves to offset the expenses after all these years. I'll reach out after Christmas and maybe we can spare a few bob for the Master. In any event, Happy Christmas or Chanukah or the others and have  a wonderful healthy happy New Year.

Here is wishing each and every mover a Very Merry Christmas and the best for 2023. May this year be wonderful and allow us to meet again soon. I know it is impossible to meet, but just a regular friendly note is always so wonderful to receive. As I age I can't believe how important we are to one another as our numbers reduce each year.  Blessing to all of us.
Ian Envis, Crowborough, East Sussex

To movers, old and new, another Festive Season draws near and using the pages of the Old Bods Association Newsletter may I take this opportunity to wish you, your families and friends a Very Merry Christmas and a better 2023. For those on duty or deployed, regulars or Oggies, and away from their families, all the very best.

The challenges over the past year, from the war in Ukraine to the many natural disasters including floods, droughts and earthquakes together with the regrettable passing of some former very respected Movers, 2022 may not be remembered as the best on record.  We will however remember all those gallant Movers as we toast another Christmas.

I think we can all thank Tony (as always) for the monthly brilliant newsletter - so join me in wishing him a great Festive Season.

From an old and bold former Mover

Ian

I would like to add my Seasonal Greetings to all the “Movers” worldwide, especially those of the UKMAMS Association, may you all have a Blessed Christmas and a peaceful 2023.  Looking at the news I fear that many of the serving members will be deployed on duties over the festive period, forced upon them by the emergency service strikes. Best wishes to you, thanks for doing a great job with the Newsletter.

Steve Turrell

Can you add a greeting on behalf of my dad, Terry Turrell, although he's no longer with us. [Note from Tony Gale: Terry was my Flt Sgt at Kai Tak in the mid-70's.  He was very well seasoned and took no prisoners when it came to standing up for "my men" defending them during confrontations with wet-behind-the-ears very junior officers throwing their weight around.  I hold his memory in the greatest respect.)

A Christmas Poem
'Twas the night afore Christmas, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backward, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned -- the dark meat and white.
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge................,
Full of goodies galore!!!!
I gobbled up turkey and cold buttered 'tatoes,
Pickles and carrots, some beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling, so plump and so round,
'Till all of a sudden........., I rose off the ground
Crashed through the ceiling, floating up to the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees,
"Happy eating to all; pass the cranberries, please!
May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes and gravy have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious, may your pies take the prize.
And may your Christmas dinner stay off of your thighs.

I’m sad to announce the passing of my good friend and comrade, Shaun Curran this afternoon, 1 December. Shaun had fought cancer for the past two plus years with courage and the humour that those of you will remember him for. Bev and I were honoured to spend a couple of his last hours with him this morning at the Hospice.

Affectionately know as “Cuddles”, he served for 12 years from 1981 to 1993 at Brize Norton and Gutersloh. He asked me to say, “see you all in the crewroom on the other side.”

RIP Cuddles

Allan Mitchley, Rhyl, Denbighshire

Dear Tony,

Please see attached photo taken at the celebration of life for Shaun Curran who passed away on 1st December 2022.

In the photo is myself, Steve Bird, Steve Smith, Gary Pym, Brian Davies, Robbie Robinson along with some of their wives. Shaun was a credit to the trade and we were all humbled to be able to support his family during this sad time.

Hi Tony,

Unfortunately Tony lost his long battle against cancer on the 27th December, he died peacefully surrounded by his family.  We are in the process of trying to organise things but as it’s between Christmas and New Year it’s nigh on impossible to do much.

He loved his time on UKMAMS and kept us entertained on a regular basis with stories of his travels (not the ones that ‘what happens down route stays down route’ of course).

Best wishes

Pat Last

Tony Gale, Gatineau, QC
I would like to take a moment to thank you for your support during the past year.  The future may look very uncertain at this moment in time, but the camaraderie we built with our shared experiences, through good times and bad, will last for our natural lifetimes. Through the OBA website and in particular the monthly newsletter, I am humbled to be able to help maintain those friendships and perhaps nurture new ones.

Let us all hope and pray that common sense will prevail in the coming year and the swords of war will get beaten into ploughshares.
