Seasons Greetings to one and all. I hope you can all enjoy a wonderful break with family. Left the RAF in 2017 but still clinging on at Brize Norton as a civilian until retirement.

May your bells jingle. Have a great Christmas and all the very best for a healthy New Year!
Mick Cocker, Swindon, Wilts
Many thanks for the reminder that I am on the Naughty List once again - it seems to be a regular occurrence! I normally sit down on a Saturday evening and deal with all my correspondence over a bottle of gin and a few tonics (with ice and a slice to dilute of course). This week I found myself without the gin, under doctor's orders due to a mild age related health issue. I am determined to make up for the loss over the Christmas period when I am once again fighting fit, so am stockpiling Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray ready for the main event.
Facebook will probably suffer a drunken battering, and there will be apologies forthcoming in the following days, unless of course the FB police intervene first.
RAF Lyneham Open Day - 1985
Anyway, enough rambling, I hope you have a great Christmas and New Year and can I take this opportunity to wish all other Movers past and present a happy and safe Christmas and happy New Year. Looking forward to catching up with many of you over the coming months.
Best Wishes, Mick
Dave & Cindy Salmon, Springfield, OR
During 2024, Cindy and I have managed to travel all over; Oklahoma to visit my sisters and nieces, California to visit Cindy’s mother, Butchart Gardens Victoria, the Oregon coast one our favorite locations to chill.
One of our best trips was to the UK to visit with my 4 kids and 6 granddaughters, we finally made it to our latest granddaughter, Willows christening in Wales. We also spent 5 days in London, taking in the Phantom of the Opera and the Royal Albert Hall for the Festival of Remembrance.
For the second time I attended the March on Sunday 10th of November, as usual it was a great time catching up with old friends. On our last day in London, we went to the Ritz for High Tea, has to be done at least once! In 2025 we plan to do a lot more traveling, we have a river cruise booked in May, Paris to Prague, and plan to travel as much as we can.
Finally, we would like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Bill & Lynda Maier, Belleville, ON
This, my first submission to the Old Bods Association Newsletter, comes about as a result of Tony Gale’s many reminders.
This festive season marks 56 years for Lynda and I since our initiation into married life (Dec 1968), and the world of air movements with our first posting to Base Movements at Cold Lake Alberta.
Back then Cold Lake boasted a Base Flight of a Sikorsky helicopter and two Dakota’s, that provided pax and cargo service in western Canada with a weekly service flight. It was the start of a positive and terrific journey that lasted for 35+ years. It gave me a career path that provided me with the privilege of meeting, working with, and learning from the finest group of air movers anywhere.
Movers whom we wish to thank for giving us the wonderful memories we will always cherish as members of an air movements family. May we extend our heartfelt Holiday Greetings and wish you All the Very Best in the coming years. (The picture was taken in a Canucks Limited Dakota at the National Air Force Museum in September of this year.)

To all Movers around the globe, active, deployed or retired, have a wonderful Christmas and I am wishing you all health and happiness for 2025 and beyond!

Joan and I would like to send a very Merry Christmas to all movers home and abroad and to those on TD away from loved ones over the festive period. May the New Year give way to better health services, lower food and gas prices and to be able maintain a good trading relationship with the US, despite the turmoil in both country's governments. Hopefully the war in Ukraine and the Middle East will end soon in everyone’s best interest.
Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year to all. Cheers!

Over the past few years it seems that the world is in complete turmoil. The war in Ukraine, Israel, Lebanon, Gaza and in so many other areas of the world has made life miserable for so many. I feel so lucky to live in a free and democratic country like Canada.
Democracy is at stake and it looks like it may get worse. This is the time to give thanks to our brave men and women of all military countries, who are trying to maintain world peace at the same time being away from their loved ones. From Allana and I, thank you for your service. God bless and have a peaceful holiday season.

Appreciate all your hard work compiling and distribution of the monthly UKMAMS OBA newsletter. It is always a pleasure to open the attachment and sit down with a cup of coffee and peruse the content.
So, notwithstanding your warnings of dodgy onions and questionable potatoes ending up contaminating my abode, I thought it prudent that I respond to your request, and therefore, would like to take this opportunity to wish all Movers, current and retired, and their families, a safe and enjoyable festive season, and every success for the coming 2025. The photo is of myself and Dot at Akrotiri earlier this year.
Syd Avery & Rita, Alicante
Rita and I wish everybody in the Movement's World an extremely Funtastic Christmas, and a 2025 that fulfils all your expectations. For all of us at home, take care of each other and keep safe. for those of you away, remember that people are thinking of you and looking forward to you getting back home. Remember, it is Happy Christmas. Be Happy and keep smilin', people will wonder what you have been up to. Photo: Royal Navy Association Torrevieja Branch Trafalgar Night dinner. (We scrubbed up well!)

As I sit tucking in with my family and friends this Xmas, they will be asked to raise a glass for the girls and boys from all the Armed Forces and Emergency Services who will not be able to be with their loved ones over this period. To all of you, thank you for looking after us and get home safely after your shift or tour to your families.
A Happy Xmas is wished upon all my ex-colleagues both RAF and Wiltshire Police.
A special mention for that guy Tony Gale who keeps us oldies in touch with each other. Thanks mate.
Some Elves can be annoying...
Don & Judy Lloyd, Calgary, AB
First of all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours. May it be among the best ever! For the past several years I have been volunteering at the local Veterans Association Food Bank and am getting a real insight as to the needs and problems of some of our veterans who are in need of help for one reason or another. PTSD seems to be one of the big problems affecting those that were lucky enough to come home.
So, this year, Judy and I want to send out a very special "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" to all those family members and Veterans who came home all beat up and especially to the family members of those that gave the ultimate sacrifice and did not return home. May God Bless them all!
Mark & Elizabeth Stephenson, Dieppe, NB
This year I was glad to be able to connect with some RAF personnel in the form of the Red Arrows and their support team at CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia. I had a good chat with the Movers on the ramp of the A400 - glad to hear they are now an integral part of Red Arrows support. Cracking display by the team especially the flypast with the CF demo CF18 Hornet. Now in my third year of retirement, Elisabeth & I popped over to Europe earlier this year to visit Italy, UK & Belgium; attached is a pic of us on a small boat from Praiano after passing under the archway at Faraglioni di Corfu.
We wish you and all your readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy New Year (UKMAMS 1985-1988 Alpha & Echo teams).
Steve Cross, Doncaster
Appreciate the seasonal opportunity to wish all movers, who are spread around the world, a very happy and merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year. I especially want to send my thanks to those who are on duty. I recall Christmas in 1989 at MPA and a very rare time on gate guard during the festive period whilst at Lossiemouth and was grateful of the camaraderie of colleagues in similar circumstances. I would like to raise a glass to those of our family who are no longer with us and are now in clear blue skies.
Terry Jackson, St Albans, Herts
My only recollection of festive activities is when I was in Aden New Years Eve 1961. I was Orderly Corporal. The Kings Own Scottish Borderers were due to sail to Hong Kong early in the New Year. Some idiot allowed them out. As the evening wore on in the NAAFI the atmosphere began to get rowdy.
I told my team, when this kicks off just stay out of the way, and we will call the military police. It kicked off. Sadly one of my team ignored my orders and laid out an army sergeant. There were consequences.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
Paul “Arfur” & Jane "Mrs E" English, Swindon, Wilts
As the festive season is nearly upon us, where has 2024 gone? Seemed to be a very fast year! My thoughts are drawn to those families who, this season, are faced with an empty seat at he table. Yet again, we have been hit hard with losing some of our cherished tradesmen; I will be raising a glass to honour them, as I'm sure others will too.
On a personal note, I would like to say a heartfelt thanks via this page for the support throughout the year for the FB pages I manage. Alongside those thanks, a massive thank you to Tony who keeps this page running every month, despite the tech issues he has faced. For those deployed and/or working over the festive season, stay safe and have as good a time as possible. Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year!
David & Sue Powell, Princes Risborough, Bucks
Hello Tony Christmas greetings to you and yours and an especial shout out for the sadly dwindling band of Newsletter readers who can actually remember me from the time we served together.
As requested, photo included; taken in September during a ‘Do It While You Still Can’ visit by rail to Southern Italy. The location is Santa Maria al Bagno, a delightful town in Southern Italy where we stayed during a Great Rail Journey tour to Puglia, famous for its little white conical houses, Trulli, and on Sue’s bucket list. Here’s to a wonderful 2025. (F Team UKMAMS, Abingdon 67-69. )

I often relish a meal of mature potatoes and ripe onions (onions are one of the few vegetables, like carrots, can be grown from the leaf growth on the subject vegetable).
Tony, my grateful thanks for all your work in keeping such a bunch of miscreants in touch, and with such a wide variety of interesting articles and tall tales!
Our Seasons Greetings to ALL movers and their suffering families (well, we all told them it was very hard work). May we all live to see our dreams come true.
Gary Ferguson, Ilkley, West Yorkshire
Seasons greetings to all with a special mention for those away from home whilst serving over the Christmas period. The picture is from Remembrance Sunday at Ilkley Cenotaph with a couple of Navy vets and drinking buddies from Ilkley RFC. Still involved with coaching now with U16's as our last group have graduated to adult rugby after winning the Yorkshire Plate and the Ilkley Sevens tournament in their last season. Family all well and expecting additional grandchildren in the coming months. Take care and have a great Xmas and a prosperous New Year.
Ian Envis, Rustington, West Sussex
As 2024 draws to a close and much of the world is in turmoil - even war, I extend my best wishes to all UKMAMS & Movers, Regular and Reservist of all nationalities who have been on active duty and eased the pain for many by being able to assist in their challenges to stay alive. If on duty over the Festive Season - thank you. To you, your families and friends - A Very Merry Christmas.
Importantly, to all retired and aged Movers (like me), and the many old friends to whom Tony keeps us all updated via his Monthly Newsletter - may you, your families and friends enjoy the Festive Season. Stay safe and be happy, while dodging all the nasty bugs that continue to challenge the world. (OC Delta Team and various Movements Duties.)

Türkiye to Acquire 12 ex-RAF C130J Super Hercules Aircraft
Türkiye is reportedly set to purchase 12 Super Hercules C-130J-30 transport aircraft previously operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF), bolstering its tactical airlift capabilities. The deal involves 12 of the 15 Super Hercules aircraft that have been in storage at Cambridge, U.K., since their retirement in June 2022. The aircraft includes the stretched fuselage C-130J-30 model, known as Hercules C4 in RAF designation, which provides greater transport capacity and operational flexibility because of its aerial refueling capacity.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has a network of bases, airfields and facilities throughout Great Britain and the commonwealth territories around the world that partner with the United Kingdom. The airfields under the RAF’s command serve many purposes besides their first-and-foremost duty to provide the infrastructure, supplies and services that the fleet routinely requires to fly their missions. Some bases also have specialized capabilities that support intelligence gathering, air mobility, rotary-wing operations, combat readiness, and maritime security. The men and women rely on the combined resources of these airfields that are spread out at different strategic locations.

RAF Waddington
Intelligence and Surveillance Operations
RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire is the headquarters for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations. The flightline at Waddington includes the Boeing RC-135 Rivet Joint and the Raytheon Sentinel R1. Each of these aircraft provides strategically crucial electronic intelligence and surveillance mission capability.
The men and women at Waddington also operate the Boeing E-3D Sentry, which supports airborne early warning, command and control systems.
According to the base's webpage, RAF Waddington plays a key role in the UK’s surveillance capabilities, supporting the gathering and analyzing of intelligence vital for national and international operations. The base is also central to NATO missions and international coalition activities like joint training exercises.
RAF Brize Norton
Air Mobility and Aerial Refueling
RAF Brize Norton, located in Oxfordshire, is the RAF’s largest base. This airfield houses the air mobility, airlift, and aerial refueling hub. The aircraft on the apron here include the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, Airbus Voyager and Airbus A400M. The base supports operations globally, including humanitarian missions, through its extensive airlift and refueling (AR) capacities.
RAF Brize Norton’s strategic location allows seamless operations integration with NATO allies and rapid reaction sorties. The missions range from dropping troops into action to delivering disaster relief payloads in emergencies.
Aerial refueling capabilities are a powerful tool for enhancing air power operations. The Voyager AR platform enables sustained operations over distant theaters by extending the range and mission endurance of RAF combat and surveillance aircraft.
RAF Benson and RAF Odiham
Rotary-Wing Operations
The RAF's rotary-wing operations are concentrated at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire and RAF Odiham in Hampshire. RAF Odiham is the home of the UK Chinook Force. The Boeing CH-47 is renowned for its heavy-lift and multi-mission capabilities. Meanwhile, at RAF Benson, Aerospatiale Puma helicopters offer tactical transport capabilities. Both stations support a wide array of tactical and civil missions, such as special operations, medical evacuation, troop transport, and disaster relief.
Joint operations with NATO and the British Armed Forces heavily utilize rotary-wing assets. RAF Benson's area of expertise is rapid equipment and troop mobility in difficult conditions. Their cutting-edge systems allow RAF Odiham's Chinook helicopters to operate in harsh environments. Both bases play a crucial role in providing humanitarian aid in conflict and natural disasters.
RAF Coningsby and RAF Marham
Combat Aircraft
RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and RAF Marham in Norfolk are the home for most of the RAF’s combat squadrons. The Eurofighter Typhoon fleet is based at RAF Coningsby. They are responsible for air defense, ground-attack operations, and quick reaction alert (QRA) missions. Units stationed at RAF Marham fly the F-35B Lightning II, the fifth-generation stealth fighter built for multi-role missions in the UK. RAF Marham is pivotal in supporting the UK’s air operations, integrating advanced technology with joint operational tactics.
RAF Coningsby's Typhoon fleet can provide 24-hour air patrol when called upon, defending British airspace against hostile intrusions. Because of its multi-role capabilities, it can be used for various missions, such as reconnaissance and close air support. The F-35B, which blends stealth, speed, and sensor fusion, is maintained and operated at RAF Marham thanks to its cutting-edge facilities.
RAF Lossiemouth
Maritime Patrol and Northern QRA
RAF Lossiemouth is located in Moray, Scotland, and specializes in maritime patrol and QRA operations for the northern UK. The base operates the Boeing P-8 Poseidon, which supports search and rescue operations and has anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Because of its advantageous location close to the North Atlantic, Lossiemouth can react quickly to sea and air threats. The station enhances the UK’s maritime security, supporting NATO operations and safeguarding critical waters.
Lossiemouth's Poseidon fleet monitors underwater activity to defend crucial sea lanes and combat submarine threats to NATO forces. Additionally, Typhoon aircraft for northern QRA are housed at the base, guaranteeing air defense coverage throughout Scotland and the surrounding airspace. RAF Lossiemouth is crucial to preserving regional stability and assisting allied operations, as evidenced by its maritime and aerial security contributions.

At this time of year I always have a thought for movers who find themselves on duty and, often, far from home. In my time it was firemen on strike, and an unexpected month in Rhodesia or moving BAOR en masse from Germany to the Gulf. Thank you, bless you all and stay safe.

Raising a glass to all from the Detectorists pub, the Two Brewers in Suffolk, wishing all Movers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Well of course the "Two Brewers" is a fictional pub in the brilliant TV series. It’s a real pub though; the interior shots were filmed at The Crown in the village of Great Glenham near Framlingham. Mark Attrill, Tartu
Another busy year here in Estonia and the Baltic Defence College. Although I left the RAF almost 4 years ago, I am still managing to repurpose some of my old uniforms (some may recall that I donated all of my old 'combats' to a Ukrainian Officer, via one of our students here in Tartu, last year). This time around it was one of my No.1 HD uniforms. I recently discovered that one Lithuanian served with the RAF during World War II so I thought it may be a good idea to reproduce a wartime version of his uniform with suitable Wings and Cap Badge, since he had such an interesting experience before his untimely death.
Flt Lt Romualdas Marcinkus, had previously served in both the Lithuanian and French Air Force before escaping to Britain in 1940. He became a night fighter specialist flying Hurricanes with No.1(F) Squadron, with two kills to his credit, but his time with the Squadron was short-lived when he was shot down in February 1942 during the 'Channel Dash' to intercept two Scharnhorst-class battleships. Romualdas was made a POW and ended up in Stalag Luft III but became a key member of the committee set up to oversee the Great Escape.
Marcinkus spoke fluent German and had a photographic memory, such that he was able to memorise all of the German Railway timetables in preparation for the escape, using booklets that he had successfully bartered for with one of his German captors. Sadly he was one of the 50 aircrew that were executed after their recapture.
I agreed to reproduce his Hurricane Mk.IIc, in model form, as part of the display for the Lithuanian War Museum in Kaunas, which also included the aforementioned uniform and No.1 Cap. The items were formally presented to the Museum during our annual Baltic History Conference here in Tartu at the beginning of November.
Enough of my exploits. As we near the end of another tumultuous year in 2024, where we have also sadly lost many of our old friends and colleagues, I would just like to wish all of you all the best for the Festive season and to hope for better things in the New Year of 2025. My thoughts are with those of you who may be working, in whatever capacity, over the festive season and to those who may be missing loved ones during this poignant time of year.
All Together, to the Skies

Thanks for another year of OBA news and memories. At this time of year I’m always reminded of a memorable Christmas Day spent in a snowy Zagreb in Croatia with Sgt Keith Parker, my Kilo team SNCO in December 1992.
We were deployed away for a month over Christmas to send relief supplies up to the besieged city of Sarajevo which was surrounded by Bosnian Serb forces at the height of the Bosnian war. Alongside our Canadian Mover counterparts from Trenton AFB, we sent dozens of pallets of blankets, medical supplies, clothing, food & drink, children’s toys plus more technical kit to reinstate heating and water supplies under the guidance of the UNHCR and took turns flying on the aircraft up-country, performing Khe Sahn approaches into Sarajevo to avoid hostile anti-aircraft and small arms fire.
December 25th was just another working day and that morning we came under sniper fire from the airfield perimeter as we did an engine running offload of teddy bears and kiddie’s toys and were forced to shelter in the Herc’s undercarriage bays until the coast was clear.
We returned around midday to a freezing cold Zagreb to build more loads with icy pallets and frozen nets. With no catering facilities open on the airfield, we pilfered some of the boxes of cargo destined for SJJ and enjoyed a miserable but memorable Christmas lunch of tinned pilchards and whiskey inside our leaky ISO container.
Keith and I reminded each other of this most untraditional festive meal every year thereafter as we exchanged Christmas cards and it was recounted with his family at his funeral wake in November 2023. I was honoured to march with Keith’s son Duncan at this year’s Remembrance Day parade in London, who was marching wearing his Dad’s medals and we shared a tot of whiskey in Keith’s memory as we formed up in Whitehall with ten thousand other veterans.
I’d like to wish all my former and current Movements colleagues a very happy Christmas, particularly those separated from their loved ones as we were thirty-two years ago. Happy Pilchards and Whiskey day to you all.

Raising a glass to all my movements family, both past and present. Have a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year.
Graham Lockwood, Leyland, Lancs My most memorable Christmas was a 3 month stint in Antigua over Christmas 1970... Leaving my fiancé to do all our wedding arrangements so that I just had to turn up on the day... But, despite that, we have enjoyed over 50 years of wedded bliss... Probably because I have never told her that I volunteered to go!
Alex Swift, Northwich, Cheshire To all the Red Arm band Community, serving and retired, my best wishes for the Festive Season. And to all of you who might be on duty and in harms way, stay safe. "Swift to Move!"

Don Hunter, Saint Quentin de Caplong Wishing all UKMAMS folks a very Merry Christmas and happy, healthy 2025. Last week I had a walk down Bugis Street in Singapore, the site of many a MAMS night out! Ken Felton, Mileham, Norfolk
Wishing Movers, whether serving or, like me, past their sell-by date, a very happy Christmas and prosperous 2025.
One job completed during 2024, was to produce a record (not LP variety!), of my unremarkable RAF career to pass onto future generations, including my first grandchild who arrived this year. A really satisfying and cathartic activity that I would encourage others to do if you get the chance.
Errol Reidlinger, Walloon, QLD
Over 20 years working Movements in the RAAF, from the rank of CPL to WOFF, I have had the pleasure of working with many fine people. I’m reminded of fellow Australian Movers and Aircrew as well as Canadians, British, New Zealanders, French, American, Malaysian and UN Movers. Many good memories and a couple of hangovers after the job was done😊. My journey started back in 1973 on 67 Air Loaders Course – Photo attached.
Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2025 to all the Movers around the world and especially the ones that find themselves working over this period. War, peacekeeping and natural disasters don’t stop for Christmas.
Dave (Dutch) & Tansy Holland, Ringwood, Hants
To all you UKMAMS and MAMS Eng personnel around the Globe and the UK. For those that remember me, I was a JNCO, known as Dave (Dutch) Holland on MAMS Eng. I left UK MAMS back in 1979, 45 years ago, to work for BAe in Saudi Arabia for five years. I left behind so many fond memories of my double tour on the Sqn from 75 - 79. I always regarded UKMAMS as a 'Mature Squadron' due to the expertise and professionalism that its' members portrayed; questionable some may say!
However, it's cohorts were definitely a brilliant bunch that knew how to play hard and work harder. I was the 'baby' of the Sqn being a much younger coworker but I will never forget some of the life skills that I was taught along the way and still put into good use to this day. The travel, experiences, situations, of which some were very dodgy, and more, that I gained along the way were second-to-none. My time was in the era of Bob Turner, Hugh Curran, Bob Dixon, Sqn Ldr Slade, Keith Smith, Brian Kingdom, Gus Cobb, Alan Kilpatrick, Graham Dodd (MAMS Eng) and many others who have since departed this earth as we know it. So I would like to spare a moment in reflection of these star players and I hope some of their wives and close friends will note that we will all take time out to remember them at this time of year. God Bless em!
Myself and Tansy, taken at Chris Bunn's house in Hout Bay, Near Cape Town (Chris, as some will know, took over my post on MAMS Eng).
Tansy and me, taken when we were glammed up on a night out in Ringwood, Hampshire where we live now.
21st June 1980 - Chris Bunn's wedding to Julia and features Graham Dodd, Barry Trudgen and Hugh Curran
So, all that remains now, is to wish all OBA members A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS, and A SUPER NEW YEAR wherever you are. Festive Greetings to you all.
Dave (Dutch) Holland.
Lindsay Campbell, Adelaide, SA Summer is upon us once again down-under and, in true Christmas form, a huge earthquake in Vanuatu last week has both the RAAF and RNZAF movers in the air on a mercy mission over Christmas! - here is an RAAF C-17 evacuating Aussies from Vanuatu in the last few days.
Mick Sullivan, Carterton, Oxon I look back sadly on this year as the list of those who have gone to the final departure lounge ever growing, but let’s look on the lighter side and wish all movers where ever they find themselves a very merry Christmas and happy new year. Eat, drink and be merry but more importantly stay safe and enjoy time with your family and friends if you can and for those on tour I hope it goes quickly.
David & Michelle Forsyth, St Hilaire de Riez With warmest wishes to all followers of the brilliant Tony oracles to whom go sincere thanks. Merry Christmas and a brilliant New Year wherever in the world you are wassailing.
Dan Bacon, Chauvin, AB Wishing all movers across the world a most joyful Christmas and a great New Years.

Ian Sloan, Charlestown of Aberlour Wishing all OBA members, especially FEAF MAMS, a very Happy Christmas and a very good New Year.
Al Gordon, St. Albert AB It is that time of year to think of all the parties and mover friends from years gone by. I wish you all, the new movers and the old mover alike, a very Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year.
Andy Downard, Ballarat, VIC Hey Tony and all 'movers' of every flavour. Hope you all have a great Christmas and an even better New Year. Phew, does that mean I get some Plum Pudding?
Jacques Dube, Rockland, ON Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. Hope 2025 will be an excellent year.

RAF Reflects on Key Achievements of 2024
As 2024 draws to a close, the Royal Air Force (RAF) reflects on an action-packed year filled with significant milestones, operational success, and continued efforts to enhance capability and sustainability, according to a recent press release.
Among the year’s highlights, the RAF participated in a large-scale international aid airdrop into Gaza on 9th April 2024. Coordinated with nine other nations and 14 aircraft, this operation, timed to coincide with Eid al-Fitr, saw the RAF deliver over 53 tonnes of aid, including ready-to-eat meals and water. “The RAF delivered more than 53 tonnes of aid across six flights,” the release states.
2024 also marked a pivotal moment for the RAF’s unmanned capabilities, with personnel from 54 and 56 Squadrons becoming the first to complete the Basic Phase Course for the RAF’s Protector RG Mk1. This aircraft, equipped with advanced equipment and precision strike weapons, will significantly enhance the RAF’s surveillance and operational reach, capable of global deployment with over 30 hours of endurance.
The press release highlighted that “Protector provides critical armed surveillance capability and will be able to deploy against potential adversaries around the globe.”
In terms of technological milestones, the RAF’s Wedgetail E7 AEW Mk1 aircraft took its maiden flight in the UK, a key step in enhancing the RAF’s Airborne Early Warning and Control capabilities. “Wedgetail will provide high fidelity and accurate target information,” according to the press release, noting the aircraft’s advanced Multirole Electronically Scanned Array and communications suite.
On the ground, the RAF marked the 10th anniversary of the A400M Atlas transport aircraft, with the fleet continuing to provide vital logistical support for humanitarian missions, including evacuations from Afghanistan and Sudan, and aid drops in Gaza. “Atlas has excelled during relief operations in the Caribbean and contributed to the military response to COVID,” the release noted.
Other notable achievements included the award of the Firmin Sword of Peace Award to RAF Global Enablement’s Medical Force, in recognition of their outstanding humanitarian work in 2023. The press release quoted “The commitment shown by our Regular and Reservist personnel represents the very spirit of service and excellence that the RAF stands for.”
The RAF also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force with a special parade at Buckingham Palace, highlighting the enduring legacy of volunteer reserve service.
The RAF’s commitment to sustainability was demonstrated with a Typhoon completing its first public display on a blend of sustainable and regular jet fuel at the Royal International Air Tattoo, marking a significant step in the RAF’s net-zero goals. “An RAF Typhoon made history when it completed its first public display on a blend of sustainable fuel and regular jet fuel,” the release noted.
The Red Arrows, too, had a momentous year, celebrating their 60th anniversary with dynamic displays and the unveiling of new designs on their Hawk jets. “The team also flew in new manoeuvres not seen for a generation,” according to the update.
Warrant Officer Adele Good made history as the first female Provost Marshal Warrant Officer and Warrant Officer Air Security Force, underscoring the RAF’s ongoing commitment to diversity and leadership. “It is an absolute privilege and honour to be appointed as the Provost Marshal Warrant Officer,” she said in the press release.
These achievements, combined with the RAF’s ongoing operational readiness and sustainability efforts, showcase the Royal Air Force’s dedication to adapting, evolving, and leading in a rapidly changing global security landscape.
As reflected in a statement by Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, “The RAF has continued to deliver with distinction this year, and we look forward to maintaining this momentum into 2025 and beyond,” as quoted in the press release.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) operates a very special luxury airliner, much akin to the American Air Force One that serves US Presidents. The special model designed to serve the British Royal Family, the Prime Minister (PM) of the UK, and other government ministers is known as the "Vespina," the name also given to a genus of moths. The aircraft is based on the Voyager Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) that serves in the RAF's aerial refueling (AR) fleet.
Five Fast Facts on the UK's Version of Air Force One
RAF Multi Role Tanker Transport MRTT
Vespina is based on the Airbus A330 widebody twin-engine airliner. It has been adapted to meet the needs of the UK's highest office. Converting the Multi Role Tanker Transport ( MRTT ) to VIP transport involved extensive modifications to both the interior and exterior of the aircraft, allowing it to perform its dual roles.
The plane's internal layout is designed for the comfort of government officials. It includes a sophisticated communications suite to ensure secure and smooth operations during international flights. As Airbus describes it, the aircraft offers significant flexibility, enabling air-to-air refueling for a wide range of allied aircraft while also serving as a luxurious platform for high-level government travel.
The RAF and Diplomacy - Setting the Best Foot Forward
Just like the US Air Force One, Vespina is a crucial tool in the arsenal of diplomacy for the United Kingdom. Vespina allows the PM and other UK leaders to travel quickly and efficiently to any destination they may need in the line of duty. This particularly special plane flies high-profile missions and symbolizes British power and influence on the global stage.
VIP Interiors, there's lots of room for movement on board the Vespina
According to the RAF the Vespina's interior is equipped as follows: 58 business class seats, 100 standard class seats, A desk for the principal passenger, 5 additional storage units.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Air Force Voyager can fly continuously for over 10 hours without needing to refuel, thanks to its special design optimized for long-distance government missions. Another special feature that is part of its diplomatic duties is secure communications equipment that allows the UK government to maintain a presence and conduct sensitive negotiations while abroad.
Versatile Operations - Multi-Role by Design
In addition to toting British ministers around the globe, the Vespina can play a game-changing role in military operations thanks to the MRTT design features of its A330 base platform. The aircraft has advanced refueling systems that can support probe-and-drogue and boom refueling methods, making it compatible with various allied air forces' aircraft.
From escort fighters to accompanying cargo planes, AR capability is an immensely powerful tool to extend the reach of air power to where it's needed most.
The Vespina's versatility allows it to adapt to the shifting needs of British military air forces or international allies. As the NATO fact sheet points out, the A330 MRTT can refuel multiple aircraft at once, extending the reach of air forces during critical missions.
The Airbus A330 MRTT is a uniquely capable platform featuring impressive design and engineering that allows it to perform transport, aerial refueling and civil roles to equally high standards. The aircraft has a remarkable range that makes it a top choice for long-endurance missions.
Length: 58.8 m (193 ft) Wingspan: 60.3 m (197 ft 10 in) Height: 17.3 m (56 ft 9 in) Maximum Takeoff Weight: 233,000 kg (513,000 lb) Maximum Fuel Capacity: 139,000 liters (36,700 US gal) Maximum Range: 9,150 km (5,690 miles) Speed: 865 km/h (537 mph) Standard Operations Crew: 3 to 4 personnel Vespina VIP Operations: 13 crew comprised of 2 pilots and 11 cabin crew, including 2 pursers. The engineering quality of the Voyager makes it an exceptional aircraft that is capable of fulfilling the strategically vital roles that is tasked with. As Airbus describes it, the A330 MRTT is one of the most flexible and efficient multi-role tanker transports available, capable of performing various missions. The RAF demands high standards from all aircraft because no mission is ever too small or unimportant. On every take-off, the Vespina is ready for anything.
With the amenities of VIP transport and the capabilities of a military tanker and hauler, the RAF's Vespina is a cutting-edge asset. The UK government relies on this particularly special jet plane to respond to a wide range of operational needs and state affairs, both in defense and diplomacy.
