Toys for the North 2025
For 15 years, the RCMP’s Toys for the North initiative has been bringing holiday cheer to children in northern communities. Every year, our RCAF crews team up with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Thomson Terminals Limited to move thousands of donated toys as part of a national effort to share the spirit of the season. It’s all about teamwork and making sure these gifts reach families in some of Canada’s most remote regions.

Thanks to everyone who makes this possible—here’s to 15 years of working together!

I was reasonably lucky to be on duty on Christmas Day. Once on gate guard whilst at Lossiemouth, finishing just before New Year’s Eve, enabling me to enjoy a traditional Hogmanay around Elgin. My 1989 Christmas was in MPA. I blame the culprits in the photo for a great time celebrating and a hefty headache lasting until 1990. Therefore, I wish all my mover family a very merry Christmas especially those on duty. All the best for the new year!
Mick Cocker, Swindon, Wilts

Finally found a moment to put pen to paper and avoid entry to the naughty list. Christmas was always a time of mixed emotions, sometimes spent at home, but knowing you'd be away on task again imminently, or sometimes already in some far-flung corner of the globe. I've had a few memorable festive seasons in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the general Mediterranean area - some quite pleasant, some not so.

For all those that find themselves away from family and friends this Christmas, may you have the best time possible and a speedy return home, and to everyone else around the world, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I was sitting thinking of all the old friends that I have met over all the Christmases', from the ones in Darwin before and after Cyclone Tracy, to service families from Malaysia to New Guinea and I thought even though many have now gone, I thank them all for the wonderful experience I had.  So, to all my fellow Movo's everywhere:  thank you and may your Christmas and new-year be with your family's friends and may you have many, many more!

As we close out another year and during this festive time, we gather with family and friends to share our love and friendship.  Take a moment during a quiet time to reflect on those lifelong movement friends who have passed on this year.  The list seems to grow and grow as the years pass.  “Lest We Forget.”

All the best to all during this Christmas and health and happiness for 2026!
Brian Everett, Darlington, County Durham

Earlier this year I completed a walk around the world 24,901, miles which I started in 2017 and averaged 8.5 miles a day. Why am I telling you this? Well, I have been raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Have a great Christmas and pass on my best wishes to those who might remember me, there can’t be many as I’m now heading to 91 years young. Joking apart, I appreciate the work you are doing to keep everyone in touch and for the information in your newsletter and for the quality of its contents. Keep well and keep producing.
Jerry Allen, Cheltenham, Glos

A short seasonal poem for movers everywhere. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!
'Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp,
Not an airplane was stirring, not Albert, not Champ.
The Condecs nestled, all snug in their spots,
While north wind was gusting to 49 knots.
The aircraft were fastened to tie-downs with care
In hopes that come morning, they'd all still be there.
And I at the trim desk, duties caught up,
Had just settled down with coffee in cup
When over the Storno, came such a clatter
I turned down the squelch to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow
Asked for clearance to land at the airport below.
He made his transmissions both lively and quick
And I'm sure that the call sign he used was "Saint Nick
".
Dudley Olsen, Caloundra, QLD

Wishing everybody, especially those serving away from family and friends, a Merry Christmas and a 2026 full of good health and contentment.  Sadly, 2025 saw Ken Carmody and Peter ‘Buntman’ Bunt pass on to that Terminal on high.  I first met Ken late 60's in Butterworth and Pete in Darwin in the 70's.  RIP you two!

Merry Christmas and Regards, Dudley - Spread the laughter, Share the cheer, Let's be happy, While we're here!
Dave & Cindy Salmon, Springfield, OR

This year Cindy and I took a 12-day Viking river cruise Paris to Prague in May, we spent a couple of days in Paris, took a bus tour to Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel tower.  We were then bused to our Ship in Trier, visiting Reims cathedral and the American cemetery in Luxembourg on the way.

Our trip included Cochem, Koblenz and Heidelberg, places I had visited over 40 years ago when stationed at Wildenrath, 1978-1981.  It was a great experience, so next year we have booked another Viking cruise for our 25th anniversary, this time a 15-day sea cruise, Athens to Rome
in July.

We hope that you all had a great Christmas and wish you a happy New Year.
Ian Envis, Rustington, West Sussex

Another year is passing and the monthly newsletter from Tony reminds me of fond memories from my days on UKMAMS and being an RAF Mover - plus ensures we know how the current Movers contribute to many relief supplies for those in need, never mind the importance of Airlift Support to the many trouble spots around the world. For all current Movers - stay safe, if on duty over the Festive Season, best wishes to you, your families and friends.

To many Movers, friends old & new, who I know read Tony's newsletter, may you and your families and friends keep safe and have an absolutely fabulous Festive Season and may 2026 bring much joy and happiness.

Cheers, Ian

To all serving and retired Movers around the world: As the year draws to a close and the Christmas season is upon us, we send our warmest wishes  to each and every one of you. Your commitment, professionalism, and tireless dedication, whether you are currently serving away on operations or reflecting on a distinguished career, is second to none.

May your Christmas be filled with joy, peace and happiness. We hope you are surrounded by loved ones and that your home is filled with love, laughter and Christmas cheer. Let's take a moment to remember all those friends that have gone to the crew room in the sky over the past 12 months.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Chris Clarke, Burlington, ON

A very Merry Christmas to all Movers past and present. I always think of the Christmas’s away from home at this time of the year and hope the present day Movers are being looked after.

The attached picture is from the Burlington Ontario Remembrance Day parade. Most likely my last as a serving police officer, I think I’ve had enough time in uniform!  Happy 2026 to everyone in the Movs family!
Peter Clayton, Wroughton, Wilts

A very Happy Christmas to Movers and their families all over the world and remembering those that are no longer with us. It seems like a very long time since I spent two Christmas periods with UKMAMS for the last Christmas at RAF Gan and then the following year at RAF Kai Tak.

When I attend Movements events these days, I feel like an antique that very few know about, but I'm pleased to say that I am very much active with my cycling, offshore sailing and new to me this year...motorcycling. Yes, I decided to give it a go and passed my test at the age of 77. So, you can teach an old dog new tricks... it just takes a bit longer.

Keep up the good work Tony, have a great Christmas and Happy new Year.
Terry Jackson, St. Albans, Herts

Kind of you to think of me Tony. I do enjoy the newsletter. Sadly, I was only a part time Mover. Singapore and Hendon. I read with envy some of the exciting things that ‘proper movers’ did. I did know some when working on the Western Hill project. Sadly a number of them now gone.

Some movers in fact are from a class I taught when I was an instructor at RAF Hereford. I recognise their names. One in fact contacted me to ask if I was the Terry Jackson who was an instructor at Hereford in 1965. I recognised the lad as a leading boy in my class. He went on to serve 35 years and retired as a Warrant Officer. He was 16 and I was 28. So please, let me enjoy some of the fabulous tales and wonder what might have been.

Happy Christmas and a fulfilled New Year.
Hammy and Eileen Thompson, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear

This summer the little feller and I went back to Gander for a couple of weeks and stayed with old friends.  Gander has really changed. It has a roundabout now! Most of the Newfies enter it with closed eyes and hope for the best. Sinbad's is still there and so is the decor. No more Flipsides, Reflections or the old Canadian Tire store (Ground Eng`s Toy shop). The white stuff has just started to fall big time.

We had a great time and discovered a winery at Twillingate with the opportunity to taste five different wines for CAD $5.00. Three of us went and fifteen tastings later we bought Kiss Me Arse wine plus some others. The wine is made from local wild berries and iceberg water. No grapes involved. It is fabulous and does the job.

If Brian Harper reads this, answer your phone. I tried to call but no answer. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all who know us.
Alex & Heather Masson, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Heather and I would like to send Christmas Greetings and a Happy New Year to all Movers and their loved ones everywhere!  Little did I think, that when I did my service during the years 1955-1958, that I would have had so many friends in trade of Air Movements.  In my time, thanks to Air Movements, I visited Canada, US of A, Australia and New Zealand, so I can relate to all the places of which you speak.

Let's hope that 2026 brings Peace throughout the World!

Cpl Alex Masson
Ken Davie, West Palm Beach, FL

To all of the movers and ex-movers out there. I was on India team in 1968/69 with the dreaded PO Wiblin! Like all of you, I loved the travel and the excitement of new places. In fact, on a trip to the USA, I met my first wife (yes, first!) and still live here in the States because of it; 50 years now. My whole life was changed because of that trip to McGuire/Fort Dix.

I am sure that all of you have similar stories of what MAMS did for you. What a gift it was. This is to wish all of you a blessed and healthy holiday season. Perhaps one day there will be a time warp, and we can all go back! I am in! Enjoy the holidays and thank you, especially to the magical Tony Gale, who brought us all together again!
Alan Liptrot, Wigan, Greater Manchester

Argh! Not the naughty list, anything but the naughty list!  Must have happened a few times over the last couple of years. Sadly, I lost my wife Anne in October 2023, and I've not felt like doing much since; not that I did much before. Best wishes to yourself and all movers. A Happy New Year to all.

It’s nearly 60 years since I joined UKMAMS in Dec 1966. Not sure how many of us are still around! Wishing all old Mover chums who remember me a very happy Christmas and a healthy 2026.

My time in service was 1965 to 1970 from Hereford to West Raynham , Abingdon (movers course), Sharjah and back to West Raynham. So not as well travelled as most !! The time in Movements at Sharjah 69/70 and in UK on Bloodhound Missile Exchange at 41 Sqdn/ Marham was great; much more "entertaining" than POL / Fwd Supply / Supply duties  I wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas  and a good New Year in 2026.

Wishing all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Brisbane! I will raise a glass to all the Movements Cadre, past & present, wishing them all happiness and good fortune, at the same time remembering those comrades we lost this year, and the families that mourn our fallen friends.
The photo of myself at right was taken recently at our favourite local cafe on the Brisbane River, next to the "Submariners Walk",  as mentioned in a previous epistles, hence the allied flags in the background.
I've attached a few favourite photos of treasured friends that you may remember, both past & present, that that I will be raising a glass to this Christmas.

British Forces Deployed Worldwide on Christmas Day
Thousands of British Armed Forces personnel remained deployed or on standby across the globe on Christmas Day, continuing operations that span Europe, the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific, Africa, the Caribbean, British Overseas Territories and the UK itself.

In Europe, around 900 British Army personnel are deployed in Estonia and Poland as part of NATO’s Forward Land Forces, contributing to deterrence and reassurance along the alliance’s eastern flank. Royal Air Force Typhoon aircraft are also flying NATO missions over Poland under Operation Eastern Sentry, launched earlier this year following Russian drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace. Further south, around 260 British soldiers and officers continue to support the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, marking 60 years of operations along the Green Line.

The Royal Navy maintains a continuous presence in the Middle East, operating across the Gulf and Indian Ocean to promote regional stability. In 2025, naval forces intercepted drug trafficking operations on multiple occasions, seizing more than £65 million worth of narcotics. British forces also remain deployed in Iraq and the surrounding region at the request of the Iraqi government, supporting efforts to counter Daesh. RAF aircraft based at Akrotiri conduct surveillance, reconnaissance and, where necessary, strike missions in support of Iraqi Security Forces. Separately, a small UK planning team is embedded within the US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre focused on post-conflict stability in Gaza.

In the Indo-Pacific, HMS Spey and HMS Tamar continue operations as part of the Royal Navy’s forward presence under Operation Highwall, supporting maritime security and regional stability. British Army deployments in the region exceed 900 personnel, including forces based in Brunei with the Royal Gurkha Rifles. These deployments are complemented by engagement activities with local communities and partners.

Across Africa, the British Army maintains a permanent presence in Kenya through the British Army Training Unit Kenya, supporting training for operations in demanding environments. British personnel are also deployed in Somalia, assisting UN, African Union and Somali National Army efforts through training, medical support and counter-IED capabilities.

In the Caribbean, HMS Trent has taken over duties from HMS Medway as part of the Royal Navy’s permanent presence, recently supporting recovery efforts in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa. British forces also remain stationed across Overseas Territories, including Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands, where personnel continue to deter aggression and uphold security more than four decades after the Falklands conflict.

Closer to home, Royal Navy vessels, Fleet Air Arm helicopters and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships continue to monitor Russian naval activity around UK waters, which has increased significantly in recent years. RAF Quick Reaction Alert remains active around the clock, with Typhoon aircraft ready to respond from bases including RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby. RAF Poseidon aircraft continue maritime patrols, while transport aircraft and helicopters are held at readiness for national emergencies.

Behind the scenes, cyber specialists at MoD Corsham will remain on duty throughout the festive period, protecting defence networks from digital threats. In London and elsewhere, troops will also remain on ceremonial and operational standby, ensuring that defence and security responsibilities continue uninterrupted during the Christmas period.

Subject: Group Captain William (Bill) Girdwood

Good evening,

My grandfather was William (Bill) Girdwood, and I‘m looking for people that knew him during his time in the RAF, especially a gentleman called Anthony Welch.

I am the granddaughter of Bill and Margrit, whom he married in 1957 in Oldenburg, Germany, whilst deployed there. Anthony Welch was their witness at the wedding, and his wife, Vera, was acting as an interpreter. I am conducting research into my family history, but sadly have nobody to ask questions of, hence my inquiries.

Additionally, if any of your readers is adept at interpreting military service records, I would really appreciate the help! I have Bill‘s RAF records but because the way the records were made throughout the years has changed, and the abbreviations are endless, I find it really confusing.

I would really appreciate a published request in your newsletter - I am very keen to talk to anybody who knew Bill.

Thank you in advance,

Flossy Campion
